Concert for the Abolition of the Death Penalty: ‘Say Peace, Sing Life’

A concert for the Abolition of the Death Penalty with the theme “Say Peace, Sing Life” was held at Daehenung-dong Cathedral in the Diocese of Daejeon on June 13, 2014. It was sponsored by the Subcommittee for the Abolition of Capital Punishment of the CBCK Committee for Justice & Peace (President: Most Rev. Matthias Ri Iong-hoon)

Most Rev. Lazzaro You Heung-sik, Bishop of Daejeon, made an opening speech at the concert. He also talked about how the Church, as an advocate of life, should shape the present and future world.

Bishop You said that the death penalty is against the teaching of the Church, and that it is like committing homicide on the pretense of inflicting punishment on a culprit.

Bishop You also said, “Jesus Christ taught us a new way to overcome the evil of the world. Only love can put an end to the vicious circle of violence, and only love can cultivate the culture of life.”

Hong Sung-eu, a professor in the Department of Law of Sook Myung Women’s University, said “Through punishment grows heavier, it cannot be an effective measure for the prevention of crimes. When a community recovers its health, it will be impossible for its members to dare to even think about committing a crime.”

Rev. Peter Kim Sung-eun, Director of the Committee for Pastoral Care in Prisons of the Archdiocese of Seoul said, “We need a social system which can sublimate the resentment against criminals into a nobler paradigm. In the long run, vicious crimes will disappear when we approach the abandoned with more concern for them in love, instead of putting them to death.”
