* The 25th Memorial Ceremony of "5.18 Democracy Movement of Gwangju" Held
The Archdiocese of Gwangju declared it would make the "5.18 Democracy Movement of Gwangju" in 1980 a stepping-stone for freedom and peace of 21th century in the spirit of Paschal Mystery. The Archdiocese of Kwangju held the 25th Memorial Ceremony of "5.18 Democracy Movement of Gwangju" with the theme "Gwangju, Pascha of May" in Namdong Parish in Gwangju. It interpreted the spirit of 5.18 Democracy Movement in the light of Gospel and proclaimed May 18 as the official archdiocesan memorial day, and designated Namdong Parish as the memorial church. The Gwangju City Office also designated Namdong Parish as the historical site of the 5.18 Democracy Movement of Gwangju.
In May 1980, then parish priest Fr. Thaddaeus Kim and many civil activists gathered together in Namdong Parish and held extraordinary meetings to prevent further civic sacrifices caused by the military oppression. After the 5.18 Democracy Movement of Gwangju, services and events to memorate the day have been held even during the dark era of military regime.
Most Rev. Andreas Choi Chang-mou, the Archbishop of Kwangju reiterated, "what happened in Gwangju in 1980 was an unforgettable history as the justice, freedom and human dignity were trodden down inhumane."
And he said, "the faithful who know how to achieve the true victory with the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ have to promote the spirit of the 5.18 Democracy Movement of Gwangju for the true peace and freedom."
* "The 12th Congress of the International Association of Catholic Medical Schools"(IACMS) Held
The 12th Congress of the International Association of Catholic Medical Schools(IACMS) was held from May 11 to 13 at Catholic University of Korea and Palace Hotel in Seoul.
Under the theme of "The Past, Present and Future of Catholic Medical School Education," 40 participants from 14 Catholic medical schools in 8 countries gathered together to discuss about the way to build a medical school in the spirit of Catholic identity and moral values.
Catholic Church has strongly opposed euthanasia, abortion, and the medical researches of human embryo cloning, which aim only the practical results and medical efficiency disregarding the human dignity.
In relation to this matter, the 12th Congress of the IACMS was held to review agenda facing the medical schools managed by the Catholic Church and to discuss how to educate medical students to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ by integrating the Catholic identity in the medical curriculum.
Mr. O'Connell, the Dean of New York Medical School run by the Archdiocese of New York, said, "Nowadays many patients show their great interest in the spiritual treatments as well as the physical therapeutic treatment." And he said, "the Bio-Ethics Institute of the medical school set up a program named "Spirituality, Religious Wisdom and the Care of the Patients" to study a way of spiritual treatment with the cooperation of the medical and religious members."
