* Church to Intensify Its Social Communication Function

Communication directors in each diocese had a seminar on June 18, 2005 at Franciscan Education Center downtown Seoul to discuss the question of intensifying the social communication of the Catholic Church in Korea. To this end, they proposed to establish an organization within the episcopal conference, which will be exclusively responsible for the communication to the public.

Reaching a consensus on the fact that the communication system of the Catholic Church in Korea is more or less weak compared to other religions, the participants emphasized that there should be an experts' meeting or an organization in exclusive charge of communication to civil society in order to make good use of mass media as the instrument of evangelization.

The Rev. Ignatius Kim Min-su, Secretary of the CBCK Committee for Social Communications, said, "There should be an organization which, assuming responsibility for the contact and cooperation with the media on the part of the Catholic Church, will provide information for press release and give advise on Catholic-related report and programs. It will be desirable to establish such an organization in the CBCK and operate it in network with communication offices in each diocese."

The Rev. Mary Joseph Han Gwang-seok, from the Communication Office of Daejeon Diocese, said, "At present, there are many difficulties for an individual diocese to manage the social communication alone. We need to set up strategies by referring to the communication system of other religions in Korea and of the Catholic Church in other countries."

In addition, the Rev. Dominicus Kim Hwa-seok, from the Media Office of Masan Diocese, suggested that experts in communication be formed on the diocesan level as well as on the national level.

Collecting these opinions, the CBCK Committee for Social Communications will present detailed plans in this regard to the Permanent Council of the CBCK by September 13, 2005.
