* The First Lay President of Sogang University Chosen
Mr. John Bosco Sohn Byeong-du, the president of the Lay Apostolate Council of Korea, has become the first lay president of Sogang University established by the Society of Jesus in 1960. Mr. Sohn was one of the final three candidates for the seat. The inauguration ceremony will be held in mid-July after the approval of the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development.
Rev. Lucas Park Hong, the chairman of the board of directors of Sogang University, said Mr. Sohn was chosen because “he seems to be the best man to reestablish the identity and esteem of Sogang University with his rich experiences in the society.” And he assured that “Mr. Sohn has also shown the best quality of Catholic leader as the president of the Lay Apostolate Council of Korea.”
Mr. Sohn said, “I will make Sogang University a place of formation for men and women to be talented enough for the age of globalization with my experiences as CEO.” And he added, “I will establish an image of the president of Sogang University who will have restored and served Sogang University giving an example to others.”
* The Diocese of Uijeongbu Launched An Internet TV Broadcasting Service
The Diocese of Uijeongbu started a Catholic Internet TV broadcasting service named UTV on June 24, 2005. It opened a new horizon of the so-called cyber-mission, which was the first attempt of a diocese in Korea.
With the mottos of ‘Lovely pupils of eyes for the world’ and ‘A street corner opened for the beautiful world’, the UTV is planning to send Catholic news reviewing social affairs from the Catholic point of view, and provide various contents of education, social welfare and culture. Especially for this year, the UTV will launch a campaign for the child cancer patients and their families with intensive reports about them. In addition to that, the UTV will provide various informative programs about Korean paper art, beads art and ceramics along with health-care programs.
After the test broadcasting on March 19, 2005, the UTV is planning to broadcast live for 5 hours a day in next two years, so that the faithful could keep in touch with the real-time information and liturgy of the Church.
The UTV will also run so-called ‘Catholic UTV Academy’ to increase the participation of the laity who have interest in VJ(video journalist) and want to learn how to be a VJ. With this, the UTV will actively engage in the formation of the lay apostolate of the information age. The UTV has already opened the first Catholic UTV Academy on April 4, 2005, and now receives the application for the second one.
