* Summer Night Concert for the Pro-Life Movement

Gwonseondong Parish of Suwon Diocese started a special 'Summer Night Concert for Pro-Life Movement' on July 16, 2005. It will be continued frist until Aug. 27, 2005, on every Saturday evening at 20:00 in the Gwonseondong Parish.

This concert is dedicated to the collection for the "Angelo Foundation of Love" which aims for the pro-life movement, especially for the promotion of the higher birth rate.

The name "Angelo Foundation of Love" stems form the Most Rev. Angelo Kim Nam-su, the late Bishop of Suwon, who dedicated himself to the pro-life movement in his life.

Many famous singers in and out of the Church participate in this concert to entertain not only the faithful but also the people of the area who have interest. In this way this concert provides the faithful with a chance to get acquainted with the local community, and vice versa. And it is another object of the concert to be a Church not only for the laity but also for all members of the local community. That is why the Rev. John Lee Hoon, the pastor of the Gwonseondong Parish, tries to make his Parish a place of culture, opened to all members of local community. For this he is already planning a cultural program for both the faithful and the people around his Parish.

The Rev. John Lee Hoon said the collection would be spent first to help the families with more than three children. He said, "When you have a third child it means a special blessing of God. I hope this concert could be a small contribution to make the society child-friendly." He added, "I am from a big family with one brother and four sisters. It was absolutely not a matter of shame for the parents to have children as many as possible before. But nowadays the trend has drastically changed and the young-married think it is embarrassing to have 'too many' children." He asserted "an active promotion of the pro-life movement first on the level of parish" to overcome the undesirable trend of the time. He meant we could expect a change of the whole society if only we could make the pro-life movement on the level of a parish eventually proliferate in the local community. For this object, he has a plan to give not only the faithful but also the non-Catholics a chance to contribute to the "Angelo Foundation of Love."

* Festival for the Migrant Workers

The Committee for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerants of the Diocese of Wonju held a festival for the migrant workers, entitled "Migrants Arirang." Arirang is the title of Korean traditional folk song.

Many migrant workers from Nepal, Philippines, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and other countries had a good time with dancing and singing along with delicious dishes.

The Rev. Simon Kim Han-ki, director of the Committee for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerants of the Diocese of Wonju, said, "I hope this event could help the migrant workers to overcome the difficulties in Korea as foreigners." He added, "I hope this could be eventually an annual event in the future if possible. There will be more migrant workers in Wonju city in the future because the city was designated as a 'Model Region for Industrial City.'" And he hoped that "the Church could play a central role to bridge the migrant workers and local community."
