* The Society Of Jesus In Korea Celebrated Its 50th Anniversary
The Society of Jesus in Korea celebrated its 50th anniversary at Sogang University in Seoul on Sep. 1, 2005. Fr. Peter-Hans Kolbenbach, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, attending the ceremony with 1,400 invited guests, officially announced that the Society of Jesus in Korea was promoted to be a 82th Province of the Society of Jesus. It was an Independent Region up to recently. This means the Society of Jesus in Korea has a right not only to address at the General Conference of the Society of Jesus but also to cast a vote to choose the Superior General.
The Most Rev. Nicholas Cheong Jin-Suk, Archbishop of Seoul, said, "The Society of Jesus in Korea has contributed much to the spirituality and mission in Korea, in addition to the educational engagement." And he added, "I would like to thank you for your missionary activities in Asia which amount to be a pay-back of 'the debt of love' owing to the foreign missionaries in past Korea."
His Eminence Stephen Cardinal Kim Su-hwan expressed his wish that "the Society of Jesus in Korea may grow further to manifest the living Jesus Christ more ostensively."
