The Rev. Paul Hwang Cheol-soo of the Diocese of Pusan appointed as the Auxiliary Bishop of Pusan

The Holy Father Benedict XVI appointed the Rev. Paul Hwang Cheol-soo as the Auxiliary Bishop of Pusan, and the Titular Bishop of Vico  di Pacato on Jan. 17, 2006. The newly elected Bishop, ordained in 1983, taught seminarians at the Catholic University of Pusan from 1991 to 1994 after he took master's degree of fundamental theology at the Katholische Universitat Eichstatt-Ingolstadt in Germany. He served as a parish priest in many parishes and a director in Maryknoll Hospital in Pusan. He also served as the general secretary of Diocesesan Office of Pusan.

Especially, the local community was moved by his unusual activity during his sabbatical year of 2005. He served as a taxi driver for a month to experience the life of "worldly" people.

With all these abundant experiences in and out of the Church, he has become an expert on pastoral care with human touch.

The Most Rev. Paul Hwang told the press just after the official announcement of his appointment, "I have seen that Bishops wear always the crucifix on their neck. It means something to me." And he added,  "I want you all to pray God for me to be a good agent of God who can carry the cross for the Church and the people of the Diocese of Pusan even if I am keenly aware of my many human vulnerabilities."

With this appointment, the Catholic Church in Korea has now one Cardinal, four Archbishops and 29 Bishops, including ten retired Bishops.

The Mass for the Bishop's Ordination will be celebrated at Namcheon Cathedral of Pusan Diocese on Feb. 24, 2006.

Message Issued for the Overseas Aid Sunday

On the occasion of the Overseas Aid Sunday on Feb. 5, 2006, the Most Rev. Lazzaro You Heung-sik, Bishop of Daejeon and President of the CBCK Committee for "Caritas Corea," issued a message titled "Whoever Loves God Must Also Love His Brother." He urged the whole Church communities to practice the sharing with each other to promote common good, and to make it able for "Caritas Corea" to do the best for the overseas aid.

The Most Rev. Lazzaro You said, "Love is the tie which unites human beings with God, the world and other people." And he added, "Love and faith for God must manifest themselves through acts of sharing, accompanied by love for neighbors and all creation." He assuredly said that "Love invites us to open our minds and our hearts to our neighbors."

He continued, "The world now produces enough food to feed everyone living; however, 40 percent of edible grain is used as livestock feed in richer countries, while more than one billion people are in hunger. Every day 24,000 people are dying of hunger and malnutrition in the world." He promised that "Caritas Corea, in the name of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea, will make every effort to help needy neighbors in other countries, because it is beyond the capacity of any single individual. "
