The 12th World Meeting of FIMARC Was Held


 


The 12th world meeting of International Federation of Rural Adult Catholic Movements (FIMARC) was held at St. J. Hasang Education Center in Daejeon from April 23 to May 13, 2006.


 


Along with Mrs. Irenee Loyara, President of the FIMARC, the Most Rev. Emil Paul Tscherrig, Apostolic Nuncio to Korea  , and the Most Rev. Boniface Choi Ki-san, President of the Committee for Justice & Peace of the CBCK, were the distinguished guests among the 300 participants of this world meeting.


 


 “Democracy, Sovereignty, Good Governance, New Structure for the Humane Development” was the theme of this meeting. The participants discussed the current crisis of agriculture and rural area, caused mainly by recent Doha Development Agenda of the World Trade Organization. And they also deliberated on the countermeasures to invigorate the life of farmers in the world.


 


His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI sent a greeting to the participants through the congratulatory message of Cardinal Angelo Sodano, which was read by the Most Rev. Emil Paul Tscherrig. Cardinal Angelo Sodano said, “His Holiness encourages the participants in their work of upholding the principles of justice and solidarity, especially for the rural poor, and in assuring them of his prayers he cordially imparted his Apostolic Blessing, which he willingly extends to the members of their families at home.”


 


At the opening ceremony, Mrs. Irenee Loyara said, “Korean Catholic Farmers Movement (KCFM) plays a great role to make a better society and promote the rights of farmers.” And she added, “Let us change the world to be able to achieve our dream for peace, justice and respect for life.”


 


The Most Rev. Boniface Choi Ki-san, who presided the opening mass, said, “We have to rack our brains to make the world where the poor are no more hungry and the self-sufficiency of food is achieved, especially now, when too many people are starving and the rural area is in crisis.”


 
Message to Buddhists for the Feast of Vesakh 2006 Was Issued


 


His Eminence Nicholas Cardinal Cheong Jinsuk, Archbishop of Seoul, issued a Message to Buddhists for the Feast of Vesakh 2006 on May 5, 2006. He said, “There are incessant conflicts, hatred, confrontation, and many kinds of discrimination in this world where we live. We may solve these problems when we all try to be as merciful as Buddha and practice love, which is the fundamental teaching of all religions.”


 


He added, “We can make the world a truly peaceful place when we respect each other and share with others what we have. I hope that we build a peaceful society and contribute to the common good of the human beings through the more invigorated interreligious dialogue.”


 


Lastly, he expressed his appreciation to Buddhists who congratulated him warmly as he was named as a new Cardinal in Korea. 



Korean Catholic Encyclopedia Is Completed


 


The compilation of Korean Catholic Encyclopedia is at last finished. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia in 12 volumes contains over 8,000 articles and about 10,000 pictures.


The Research Foundation of the Korean Church History started the compilation of the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia in 1993. After 12 years since the publication of the first volume, the last 12th volume saw the light of the day on April 25, 2006.  

Over 2,500 experts and more than 12 million US dollars were needed to complete the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia, which was written according to the spirit of the II Vatican Council for the first time in Korea.


 
A party in celebration of the publication of the encyclopedia will be held at the Catholic Center in Myeongdong on June 9, 2006.
