Religious Leaders Issue a Statement to Call for Peace in the Korean Peninsula


 

The Korean Council of Religious Leaders issued a statement addressed to the Korean people on July 27, 2006, to call for resumption of dialogue between the two Koreas .


The Statement entitled “For Peace in the Korean Peninsula and Reunification of the Nation” said, “The Problem of Korean Peninsula should be treated with a win-win method through the peaceful dialogue.”


  The Council urged to instantly participate in the dialogue based on the profound understanding on international situation.


 In addition, the Council stressed, “For the brotherly love and harmony of the Korean People, humanitarian exchange, such as the reunion of long separated family members from North and South Korea, giving aid to the flood victims in North Korea and non governmental exchanges including the sightseeing project to Mt. Geum-gang and the operation of the Gae-seong Industrial Complex, should not be suspended, regardless of the political interest.”


 The Council requested the political leaders to show the win-win leadership through the dialogue and collaboration for the righteousness of nation.


  The Council is composed of the representatives of seven major religions in Korea , including the Catholic Church, the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, the Christian Council of Korea, the One Buddhism, the Confucianism, Chondogyo, the Conference of national religion of Korea .


 At the moment the Most Rev. Hyginus Kim Hee-jooing, President of the CBCK Committee for Promoting Christian Unity & Interreligious Dialogue, represents the Catholic Church in this Council.
