Action for the Respect for Life

The Lay Apostolate Council of Korea sent materials about bioethics to the newly elected Catholic members of the National Assembly on August 14, 2008.

This action meant to show the concern of the Church over the 'Bioethics and Safety Act,' which was revised in last May and is ready to be enacted in December this year. Some articles of this Act go against the respect for life and the dignity of human beings, allowing the scientific research on human embryo and the compensation for the expense of ovum extraction for the in vitro fertilization. The Catholic Church in Korea has shown her grave concern for the Act since the beginning of the public debate on its revision.

The materials are consisted of: 'With Solicitude about the Retrogressive Revision of the Bioethics and Safety Act, A Statement Opposing the Revised Bioethics and Safety Act' of the CBCK Committee for Bioethics (May 16, 2008); 'To Retrieve the Dignity of Human Life, A Message for the 14th Day for Life' of the CBCK Committee for Bioethics (May 25, 2008); 'On Embryonic Stem Cell Research, A Statement of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' (June 13, 2008).

Prof. Dr. Thomas Han Heung-sun, President of the Lay Apostolate Council of Korea, said, "I hope that the newly elected Catholic members of the National Assembly realize the Christian spirit in Korea through their parliamentary activities, being faithful to their identity as the Catholic faithful." He continued, "I will keep communicating our position to them case by case, lest they go against the teaching of the Catholic Church."
