The Most Rev. Matthias Ri Iong-hoon, Auxiliary Bishop of Suwon, was nominated as the Coadjutor Bishop of Suwon on October 10, 2008. This is the first time in the Diocese of Suwon, that an incumbent Auxiliary Bishop is nominated as the Coadjutor Bishop.

Since his nomination as the Auxiliary Bishop of Suwon in 2003, Bishop Ri has been the General Vicar of Suwon. He also has held various posts: President of the CBCK Committee on Education and President of the Federation of Catholic Educational Foundations in Korea among others.

In an interview right after the nomination, Bishop Ri said, "Becoming the Coadjutor Bishop means a call to a greater service than before. With this nomination my responsibility and mission have also become heavier. All can do is just prayer. I will strive for a life as a faithful servant of the Lord." Then he continued, "I am almost sure that the faithful of the Diocese of Suwon have no equal in vitality and faithfulness to the diocesan instruction. They always try their utmost to achieve the goal in unity, which the diocese has set. I am very proud of them, and always thank them for their efforts for the evangelization, Small Christian Communities, and the promotion of the faith life of youth. With such faithful, there is nothing that I cannot do. On the other hand, I feel great responsibility which I bear on my shoulder. I will always be with them."
