Decree of the Bishop of Suwon on the Private Revelation of Theresa Hwang of Sangju Date 2008-10-17

The Most Rev. Paul Choi Deok-ki, Bishop of Suwon, issued a 'Decree of the Bishop of Suwon on the Private Revelation of Theresa Hwang of Sangju' on October 7, 2008.

With this Decree Bishop Choi gave specific order to three religious institutes, Clerical Society of the Most Holy Trinity of Mirinae, Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Mirinae and Sisters of St. Joseph's Charity of Mirinae, to immediately remove all statues related to the private revelation of Theresa Hwang of Sangju. They also have to eliminate the collects in their own prayer book, which refer to the private revelation of Theresa Hwang of Sangju.

Bishop Choi also ordered the three religious institutes to issue a joint statement that they have no more relationship to the private revelation of Theresa Hwang of Sangju, even though they have practiced such a religious life hitherto. They also have to officially send the joint statement to the Apostolic See, the Diocese of Suwon, and all the Archbishops, Bishops and priests of Korea by November 30, 2008.

The three religious institutes should revise their current prayer books and ask the recognition of the Bishop of Suwon. Until the grant of the recognition, they have to use only the official prayer books of the Catholic Church (Catholic Prayer Book and Roman Breviary). Bishop Choi also ordered the three religious institutes to send the Diocesan Archive Office of Suwon all the publications and materials with no official recognition of the Catholic Church, which are related to the private revelation of Theresa Hwang of Sangju. Then he said that they have to submit a written report on their fulfillment of his order by December 31, 2008. Bishop Choi also urged priests, religious men and women, and the faithful to refrain themselves from the private revelation of Theresa Hwang of Sangju.

The three religious institutes already issued a joint declaration on September 3, 2008, pledging that they would faithfully obey the instruction of the Pontifical Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (Prot. 0816/08, March 14, 2008). This Decree meant to urge them to make a follow-up measure of their pledge.

The private revelation of Theresa Hwang of Sangju, mentioned in the Decree, refers to the happening of a false Marian devotion around Sangju city in Gyungbuk Province, Korea since 1947. In 1957, the Most Rev. John Sye Jeong-kil, Vicar Apostolic of Daegu at that time, had already denied the supernaturality of the case with the 'Declaration on the case of Theresa Hwang' (Declaratio de casu Hoang Theresiae).
