Seminar on the Common Good and the Government Power


 


The CBCK Committee for Justice & Peace (President: The Most Rev. Boniface Choi Ki-san) held a seminar with the theme 'Human Right of the Poor and Legalism in Korea - Common Good and Government Power', on June 12, 2009 at the Catholic Center in Myeongdong, Seoul.


 


In his opening address, Bishop Choi explained the purpose of the seminar, saying "This seminar intends to examine the government power which is continuously abused in our society, and the legalism which is often wrong used." And he added "I hope this seminar can be an occasion to see the proper relationship between the common good and the government power, and what we can do to protect the human right of the poor."


 


This seminar was proceeded under the presidency of Fr. Hugo Park Jung-woo, Secretary of the Committee, with the following presentations: 'The mission and the reality of the government power defined by the law' by Prof. Ha Tae-hoon (Korea University Law school); 'Common good according to the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church' by Fr. Francisco Oh Kyeng-hwan (Incheon Catholic University), and 'Human right of the poor and the Government Power' by Fr. Peter Lee Kang-seo (Director of the Catholic Urban Poor Pastoral Committee of the Archdiocese of Seoul).
