The CBCK Committee for the Lay Apostolate (President: Most Rev. Andrew Yeom Soo-jung) held a seminar with the theme "Aging Society and the Church", on September 16, 2009 at the Catholic Center in Seoul.

According to the Statistics of the Catholic Church in Korea 2008 published by the CBCK, as of 2008, the elderly Catholics over 65 account for 630,529 or 12,6% of the total Catholics (5,004,115).

All speakers of the seminar like Professor Thomas Han Hong-soon (President of the Lay Apostolate Council of Korea), Mr. Thomas Aquinas Cho Eun-sang (member of the Social Apostolate under Lay Apostolate Council of Korea) and Mr. Gregorio Kim Wang-ki (member of the Committee for Lay Apostolate) made an emphasis unanimously on the importance of the pastoral care for the elderly and the support for it in this aging society. They also pointed out the urgency of the change of mind for the vitalization of the ministry to the elderly in the Church that the elderly are not only the object of the evangelization, but also its subject. They also emphasized that for this, the investigation of the reality of the elderly shoud be preceded for the practical pastoral policies. In particular, the establishment of an 'Elderly Week' was proposed to spread the true meaning and values of the old age.

Concluding the seminar, Bishop Yeom asserted, "To solve the aging problem in our society, the Church should establish a tie with the government in realizing the common good systematically and efficiently, and use the Church's infrastructure like parishes or Church-run hospitals as the axis for solving the aging problem."
