Message for the 28th Human Rights Sunday

The Most Rev. Boniface Choi Ki-san, President of the CBCK Committee for Justice & Peace and Bishop of Incheon, issued the Message for the 28th Human Rights Sunday as of December 6, 2009.

In his message entitled ''We have to pursue the development of the whole human beings, based on justice and the common good, not for material one', Bishop Choi said, "In this year we have had to weather many difficulties, confronting financial and economic crisis on a global level. We may say that this crisis resulted from both mammonism, which has bolstered the unsatiable greed and desire for consumerism on the pretext of development, and the abuse of authority lacking the ethical principles of justice and the common good. Furthermore, this crisis causes more pain to the poor and feeble who are left out of the development." And he added, "We cannot but see the fact that the mode of development practiced in Korea is mostly for the interest of small group of the powerful, with no regard for the socially weak. Moreover, the human greed threatens other lives of nature which we have to share with them."

In conclusion, he asserted, "First of all, we as Christians have to pursue a development based on the truth implanted in us by God, as well as the teaching of love for the practice of such a truth. We are far away from the true social development when we search for the material development to satisfy our greed trying all possible means, instead of the development for the common good and justice based on the dignity of a human being. …… The government, with its authority and governance over tremendous amount of resources, must seek after a policy for the self-realization and happiness of all human beings with no exception, caring for the weak, protecting the environment, while giving up the developmental method, which can give rise to the destruction of natural environment or the guarantee of economic profits for a small number of people."
