Resistance of the Korean Catholics to Resuming the Death Penalty

After the Constitutional Court of Korea ruled again the death penalty last month, the Ministry of Justice started to consider the installation of the execution facilities at Chungsong Correctional Institution with intention to carry out the death penalty. However, the Korean Catholics strongly resisted the government movement.

The CBCK Committee for Justice & Peace (President: Most. Rev. Boniface Choi Ki-san) held a plenary meeting on March 18, 2010, and made a decision to find new ways to abolish the death penalty.

Members of the CBCK Committee for Justice & Peace were going to visit the Minister of Justice to make a strong protest of its action. Also, they planned to have a meeting a with the Speaker of the National Assembly, who remarked on the abolishment of the death penalty, in order to ask him to enact the bill for the abolishment of the death penalty.

The Committee also decided to promote the correct awareness of the public about the death penalty.
