Prohibition of the Sacrament of Matrimony for the Migrant Women in Disguised Marriage

Prohibition of the Sacrament of Matrimony for the Migrant Women in Disguised Marriage

The CBCK Committee for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Foreign Residents Living in Korea (President: Most Rev. Lazzaro You Heung-sik) announced that when migrant women with Korean nationality by getting married in disguise are trying to get married with another man, priests must not administer the sacrament of matrimony.

The secretary of the same committee, Rev. Andrea Heo Yoon-jin said at the meeting of the diocesan priests for pastoral care of migrant and foreign residents living in Korea on November 11, 2010 that this opinion was provisional until the Tribunals of the Church would make any clear and exact decision.

Rev. Heo also said, "I have often heard that those who were rejected to receive the sacrament of matrimony at the Archdiocese of Seoul go to other dioceses to ask the sacrament. Because a disguised marriage is wrong from the very beginning of marriage, priests in charge of migrants must deal with this kind of situation in firm action."

Bishop You said, "The sacrament of matrimony is very noble and precious. Even though those women who try to receive the sacrament in a disguised marriage are not right, priests should try to figure out ways to help them."
