The Most Rev. Peter Kang U-il, President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea (CBCK),  visited the Diocese of Sendai, the area most severely affected by the huge earthquake and tsunami in Japan, together with the Most Rev. Peter Lee Ki-heon, bishop in charge of the Korean-Japanese Bishops' Exchange Meeting, from April 27 to 28, 2011.

In his report on the visit to the Sendai Diocese, Bishop Kang said that he visited this diocese to see for himself the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami and to express on behalf of the Korean faithful their closeness to the victims.

Accompanied by the Most Rev. Tetsuo Hiraga, Bishop of Sendai, the two Korean bishops first visited the cathedral damaged by the disaster. They also visited the Sendai Diocese Support Center, established as an emergency measure to promote the relief activities of volunteers in devastated areas, and they offered words of encouragement to the staff members.

Then they looked around the airport and the port of Sendai, situated about 10km from Sendai City. Finally they visited some of the worst-hit towns in northern coastal areas in Japan.

Bishop Kang continued that it was heartbreaking to see the harsh living conditions of the inhabitants, but he felt also the Divine Providence there.

"When we look just the surface of the disaster like this, we may feel how absurd it is and think it is incomprehensible why God permits this terrible disaster. From other perspective, however, we can also feel that God prepares for us unexpected great graces through this disaster.", he said.

In making reference of the Kobe earthquake as well, he added, "These two disasters occurred recently in Japan provide an occasion to open up a new horizon where people come to show their innate concern for one another and share mutual compassion and helps. This change is a seed awakening warm humanity and new hope in Japanese society."

He delivered additional donations collected for emergency aid to the Dioceses of Sendai and Saitama. The bishops of Sendai and Saitama expressed their deep gratitude for the concern and consideration of the Korean faithful.
