Meeting of the Representatives of the Seven Major Religions in Korea

Most Rev. Hyginus Kim Hee-joong, Archbishop of Gwangju, invited the representatives of six major religions in Korea to Gwangju to have time for better mutual understanding.

On August 26, 2011, the representatives were warmly welcomed by Archbishop Kim and the Most Rev. Simon Ok Hyun-jin, Auxiliary Bishop of Gwangju, at the Archdiocesan Office, and they looked around the office.

On August 27, 2011, they visited the May 18 National Cemetery constructed in memory of the democratic uprising of the citizens of Gwangju in May 18, 1980. Mr. Kang Un-tae, Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, accompanied the representatives on the site. They also took a view of the photos and videos on the democratic uprising of the May 18, 1980, exhibited at the Memorial Hall of May 18 Democratic Uprising. They also paid a visit to Gwangju Catholic University, accompanied by Fr. Lupus Roh Seong-gi, President of the Gwangju Catholic University. They had a time for a talk with the seminarians. Ven. Jaseung, President of Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, said to the seminarians that “I hope that you become good ministers who can share in the pain and sorrow of this world where we live.” Archbishop Kim said to the seminarians that “people will listen to your words when they are moved, not when they hear a rational theory. …… Therefore you have to always think first whether your friends and God are moved by your behavior and thought.” Other representatives also made well-wishing remarks to the seminarians.

The representatives were: Ven. Jaseung, President of Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism; Rev. Kim Yeong-ju, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches in Korea (KNCC); Ven. Kim Ju-won, Director General of Won-Buddhism; Mr. Han Yang-won, President of the Association for Native Korean Religions; Mr. Choi Geun-deok, President of Sung Kyun Kwan Association of Confucianism in Korea; Rev. Yim Woon-kil, Supreme Leader of Central Headquarters of Chondogyo.
