Message for the 30th Human Rights Sunday

* Message for the 30th Human Rights Sunday

The Most Rev. Matthias Ri Iong-hoon, President of the CBCK Committee for Justice & Peace and Bishop of Suwon, issued the Message for the 30th Human Rights Sunday as of December 4, 2011.

In his message entitled Christian Vocation to Learn and Practice the Teachings of Justice and Charity: on the Occasion of the Establishment of Social Doctrine Week’”, Bishop Ri said that the Church in Korea has continually opposed artificial contraception, abortion, death penalty, euthanasia, and embryo research which violate the dignity of human life. He added that the Church in Korea has also pointed out severe errors which violate human dignity and value of common good, by voicing protest against the Four Major Rivers Project and the construction of a naval base in Jeju Island which are the critical issues in our society against eco-justice.

Bishop Ri also stressed that Korean bishops at the 2011 Autumn General Assembly of the CBCK decided to establish Social Doctrine Week in order to attract more attention to the Catholic social teachings which interpret matters of our society from the perspective of the Gospel. The Social Doctrine Week is to be observed during the second week of Advent starting with Human Rights Sunday.
