Installation Ceremony of Archbishop of Seoul

On June 25, 2012, the Most Rev. Andrew Yeom Soo-jung took possession of the See of Seoul, succeeding H.E. Nicholas Cardinal Cheong Jinsuk, the Archbishop Emeritus of Seoul.

His installation ceremony took place at the Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul. Some 3,000 participants attended the ceremony, including the Most Rev. Osvaldo Padilla, Apostolic Nuncio in Korea, 29 other brother bishops, government officials and representatives of other religions.

In his greetings, Cardinal Cheong said that Archbishop Yeom as a faithful pastor has consistently devoted himself to the Archdiocese of Seoul through the fruitful practice of charity and justice. Cardinal Cheong invited the faithful to pray for the pastoral mission of the new Archbishop of Seoul.

In his homily during the Mass following the installation ceremony, Archbishop Yeom said, “On the basis of the ‘Evangelization 2020 Movement’ initiated by my predecessor, H.E. Cardinal Cheong, I will exert myself to open a ’new era, a new areopagus for missionary works’ in which ‘Christian beauty’ is to be communicated in our society.” He continued, “A good shepherd who cares for the Lord’s flock seeks out his scattered sheep to bring them together. Therefore, I shall devote myself to unity among all people as one family, one community in deep solidarity.”

It is to be noted that Mr. Samuel Jang Jae-eon, Chairperson of the Korean Council of Religionists in North Korea and of the Association of North Korean Catholics sent a telegram to congratulate the new Archbishop of Seoul on his installation.
