* Coadjutor Bishop of Taejon Ordained

The Most Rev. Lazarus You Heung-sik, who was appointed as Coadjutor Bishop of Taejon by Pope John Paul II on July 9, was ordained on August 19 with the Most Rev. Joseph Kyeong, Bishop of Taejon, presiding.
Some 6,500 people attended the ordination and congratulated on the birth of new bishop and among those present were His Eminence Stephen Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan, the Most Rev. Giovanni Battista Morandini, Apostolic Nuncio in Seoul, the Most Rev. Andreas Choi Chang-mou, President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea, the Most Rev. Paul Tschang In-nam, Apostolic Nuncio in Bangladesh in visit to Korea and other bishops.
The Most Rev. Kyeong said to the new bishop, "Remember that you are chosen  among people to do the work of God for them," and asked to "pray and offer the sacrifice for the people entrusted to you and endeavor to receive necessary graces by virtue of Christ."
The Most Rev. Giovanni Battista Morandini said in his congratulatory message, "I pray that the new bishop may become the pastor who guides the flock of Jesus Christ to the light of the Lord" and asked him to have close relations with priests and seminarians.
The new bishop entrusted his episcopate to Saint Mary, saying, "Following the example of Saint Mary who gave birth to Jesus, the light of the world, I will try to be a 'little Mary' in the Church who can embrace all things in love."
The Most Rev. You was born in 1951 in Nonsan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do and was ordained a priest in 1979 in Rome. Having obtained a doctorate in dogmatic theology from the Pontifical Lateran University, he came back to Korea and served as the first assistant priest of Daeheung-dong Cathedral of Taejon, director of Solmoe retreat house, director of the educational center and the pastoral department of the Diocese of Taejon. He has taught at the major seminary of Taejon since 1994.

* Auxiliary Bishop of Kwangju Ordained

The Most Rev. Hyginus Kim Hee-joong, who was appointed as the Auxiliary Bishop of Kwangju by Pope John Paul II on July 9, was ordained on August 18 with the Most Rev. Andreas Choi Chang-mou, Archbishop of Kwangju, presiding.
Some 3,500 people attended the ceremony including His Eminence Stephen Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan, the Most Rev. Giovanni Battista Morandini, Apostolic Nuncio in Seoul, the Most Rev. Paul Tschang In-nam, Apostolic Nuncio in Bangladesh in visit to Korea, and other bishops, priests, religious and the laity. They congratulated the birth of a new bishop and wished for further development of the Archdiocese of Kwangju.
The Most Rev. Choi said, "Episcopate is a position to serve, not to enjoy honor. Thus, a bishop should serve for the good of the faithful rather than control them," and asked the new bishop to "become a faithful server, administrator, and guardian of the divine work of Jesus and a pastor who can offer his life to his flock."
The Most Rev. Giovanni Battista Morandini said in his congratulatory message, "I hope that the pastoral ministry developed by the Archbishop and the new bishop will shine as a beacon so that everyone who follows the light can be saved."
Responding to this, the Most Rev. Kim said, "I will try to live as a pastor relying on the power of prayer and light of the Word, a pastor who is poor and humble, and a servant who is always ready to learn and serves for people."
The new bishop, Most Rev. Kim was born in 1947 in Mopko-si, Jeollanam-do and was ordained a priest in 1975 after graduating from the Catholic University of Kwangju. After having obtained a doctorate in history of Church from the Pontifical Gregorian University, he had taught seminarians at the Catholic University of Kwangju from 1983 to 2001. He has been the pastor of Geumho-dong parish in Kwangju since February 2002.

* Renovation of Jangchung Church Discussed at Inter-Korean Meeting

On the occasion of the 58th anniversary of Korean Liberation Day on August 15, "Inter-Korean Meeting for Peace and National Unification" was held in Pyeongyang from August 15 to 16 with joint sponsoring of "2003 Inter-Korean Events Promoting Headquarters" of South Korea and "Conference of the Reconciliation of Korean People" of North Korea.
In this Meeting, held with the theme "Let's Fulfill the Joint Statement of June 15, 2000 Inter-Korean Summit to Avoid War and Realize Peace," some 890 participants, composed of South and North Koreans and overseas Koreans, had various events and meetings by religions, the labor circle, farmers and women and adopted common resolution for peace and unification.
In particular, the Catholic participants of two Koreas discussed various matters such as giving aid to North Korea, renovation of Jangchung church, expanding the inter-Korean exchange of Catholics. They also offered Mass at Jangchung Church on August 17 and prayed for the unity of Korean people.
