* Seoul Senatus of the Legion of Mary Celebrates its 50th Anniversary

On August 17, 2005, Seoul Senatus of the Legion of Mary (Spiritual Director: Rev. John Youn Byeong-gil, Group Director: Mr. Gregory Paeng Jong-seop) held a congress to mark its 50th anniversary and made resolutions to renew its spirit and to become agents of evangelization.

A resolution was made public at the congress in which some 13,000 members were participating. The resolution expresses their will to proclaim Good News to the world according to the words of the Lord; to become faithful and humble collaborators of pastors following the model of Mary's holiness; and to faithfully lead the life of prayer and service according to the Gospel and teaching of the Legion of Mary.

Held with the theme "Living the Year of Eucharist along with Mary," the congress was featured with various events, such as procession, recitation of rosary, ceremony of the 50th anniversary and celebration of Mass.

During the congratulatory Mass, the Most Rev. Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, Archbishop of Seoul, lauded the activities of the Legion of Mary, saying, "Fifty years ago, the evangelization rate in Korea was not more than 1%, but now it reaches almost 10%. Behind this rapid growth of the Catholic Church in Korea, there has been the generous commitment of the Legion of Mary members."

Mr. Gregory Paeng, Director of the "Immaculate Conception" Senatus in Seoul, appealed to the members, "On this joyful occasion, let's take the initiative again to proclaim the Good News to the world not by words but by our behavior, in accordance with the principles of the Legion of Mary."

Preparing this congress, the 61,254 members in Seoul Senatus had recited 350,000,000 decades of rosary from January for prayer intentions, such as the growth of Eucharistic devotion in the Church in Korea; world peace and reunion of separated families in South and North Korea; sanctification of the family; and activation of spirit of the Legion of Mary.
