The World Methodist Council (WMC) signed the 1999 Catholic-Lutheran Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification (JDDJ) at the 19th World Methodist Conference at Kum Nan Church in Seoul , on July 23, 2006.

Through this agreement, 7 years after the issuing of the JDDJ agreed between the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) on October 31, 1999, the Catholics and the Methodists also take a historic ecumenical step, resolving the main theological controversy on the doctrine of justification between them. 

On behalf of the Catholic Church, His Eminence Walter Cardinal Kasper, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, signed the tripartite agreement on justification and set a new landmark for one Christian faith and one Church, together with His Eminence Stephen Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan, His Eminence Sunday C. Mbang (WMC Chairman), the Rev. Dr. George Freeman (WMC General Secretary), and the Rev. Dr. Ismael Noko (LWF General Secretary).

Based on this agreement, the three denominations commit themselves to strive together for deepening their common understanding of justification in theological studies, teachings and preachings. 

As Methodists joined Lutherans and Roman Catholics in the JDDJ, three Churches have a new place to proclaim the same doctrine of justification with one heart. 

Cardinal Kasper appreciated the tripartite agreement as one of the major ecumenical achievements, through which the doctrine of justification became a common heritage of the whole Church. He also stressed, "It is important to reach consensus, by adapting the common faith to the concrete realities of society and communities."
