A New 'Food Market' Opened

Caritas Seoul, social welfare organization of Seoul Archdiocese, (President: Most Rev. Lucas Kim Woon-hoe, Auxiliary Bishop of Seoul) opened 'Seongbuk Food Market', the forth affiliate of its kind, in Sungbukgu Samsundong, Seoul, on December 18, 2008. Bishop Kim presided over the opening ceremony.


 


The 'Food Market' is a kind of free grocery shop where the people in need can get what they need for nothing once a month. The foods and other necessities of life of the Food Market are donated by businessmen and private persons, as well as institutes or organizations.


 


At the moment there are 500 'members', who can use the 'Seongbuk Food Market', mostly from family members of the single elderly, the handicapped, and the low-income citizens. Caritas Seoul is planning to increase the number of members with the promotion of more donations and help of volunteers. Until now, the Caritas Seoul has operated three Food Markets. They are 'Hwagok Food Market', 'Yourak Food Market', and 'Gangseo Food Market' in Seoul.
