● Solidarity of Catholic Women Launched Officially
Eleven Catholic women's organizations in Korea launched "Solidarity of Catholic Women's Organizations" on October 7th at the Jeongdong Franciscan Center, downtown Seoul.
The Solidarity includes the Association of Major Superiors of Religious Women in Korea, the Catholic Women's Community for a New World and the Women's Conference of Seoul Archdiocese aiming to promote women's status within and out of the Church and their active participation in the apostolate.
In the 2000 Women Statement, the newly launched women's organization declared that it will work toward identifying the dignity of women in accordance with God's will and realizing gender equality by breaking social discriminative structure on women and by sharing suffering of the oppressed and rejected women in the society. In this regard the Solidarity will focus its efforts on women's education, protection of environment, participation and collaboration in social activities and issues on women.
The Most Rev. Peter Kang, Auxiliary Bishop of Seoul, said in his congratulatory address that "Women's role and contribution are essential in building 21st century of peace and reconciliation."
Sr. Augusta Hong, President of the Association of Major Superiors of Women Religious in Korea, spoke with theme of "Catholic women in preparation for the 21st century" and Ms. Pae Kum-ja, a prominent woman lawyer, spoke with theme of "Discrimination on Women and its actual situation.
